If you can’t fight for Igbo people’s interest, shut up when I am doing it, Senator Umeh hits hard at critics

The senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has disclosed that his desire is to serve the Igbo people.

Umeh, who is seeking re-election in the upcoming general election, made the assertion while replying to critics who accuse him of overstepping the boundary of his primary constituency to speak for others, especially on national issues.

According to reports, the senator has been vocal on issues such as non-inclusion of an Igbo person in the board of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), his sponsorship of the Bill for Federal University of Education, Aguleri, in Anambra North Senatorial district and the motion to include Eastern Rail line in the Nigerian rail project.

Umeh who was interviewed by newsmen during the weekend, stated that he could not fold his arms and watch any part of Igbo land marginalised or lose its entitlement just because he is not from that area.

He said that as soon as the senate received the proposal for the board of EFCC and he realised that the East and South-South were excluded from representation, he rose to oppose and ask that it be returned to the president for the proper thing to be done. That was also the case with the omission of South East in the rail project.

As for the Federal University of Education, Aguleri, Umeh said he needed not come from Anambra North to know that of the three senatorial districts in the state, Anambra North was the only one without a federal institution and so he initiated a Bill along with the other district’s representative, Stella Odua, to close the gap.

He said that he had redefined representation at the National Assembly and that people from his constituency would no longer go there to look for what would go into their pockets.

According to him, he was able to put in the 2018 budget 41 physical projects worth over N720 million, far above the N266 million which Senators are entitled to because of the numerous committees he belonged to.
