Elder statesman and Chairman of Northern Elders Council (NEC), Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP against the imposition of candidate during its presidential primaries.
PDP will on Saturday conduct its presidential primaries in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Alhaji Yakasai speaking to newsmen in Abuja kicked against “the so-called consensus” candidacy adopted by the ruling party, APC
He noted that electoral process of consensus candidate as practiced by APC was against democratic tenets and should not be entertained by the PDP.
“The party’s rival, APC, has already settled for the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari.
“The new trend has emerged in the Nigerian electoral process by which aspirants are subjected to pressure for a “consensus candidate”, which in my opinion is against the spirit and tenets of true democracy.
“Delegates should be allowed to choose a candidate of their freewill: that is true democracy,” Yakasai said.
