As political activities ahead of the 2019 general elections gradually gather momentum, Abia former Governor and a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress ( APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has vowed to deliver the state to APC in 2019.
Kalu while addressing Ward, Council and State Executive members of the party in his Camp Neya Igbere country home on Thursday, boasted that he had the capacity and the federal backing to dislodge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) come 2019.
He said PDP-led government in the state should start preparing its hand over, boasting that ” PDP rigging machine has crashed”.
His words: ” I want to assure you that change has come to Abia State. PDP rigging machine has crashed. It crashed in Atlantic Ocean and Sahara desert.
“We are not going to surrender our fate to anybody who will rig the election. We have the antidote and that is what we are going to apply. We will not allow anybody to rig us out.”
The former Governor said he was not supporting any APC aspirant yet but would use all resources at his disposal to back and ensure the success of the party’s gubernatorial flag bearer, as well as other candidates that would emerge after its primaries.
”I will not support any aspirant now until our candidate emerges. My advice to you is give us salable candidate at the primaries. We will match PDP anyhow they want it.
”If they think they know how to win election I taught them that, and no child grows bigger than the father.
”The days of locust are over in Abia State. We will chase them all away. They are ruling us with lies. Just give us good and competent candidate and we will deliver him. APC candidates at all levels will win.
”Once there are candidates we will supply to them what they need to deliver. Forget about somebody telling you that they will rig the election. Who taught PDP how to win election? Anything that they do in election I taught them.
”I am not afraid. If they say we are going to fight we will fight. I am not Saint Buhari. There is only one saint in Nigeria, and he lives in Katsina State. My name is OUK. I am not a saint. I am a rugged jeep. I am made in Igbere. I am a hurricane. I am a rock, and anything trying to stand in the way will be crushed”.
The former Governor said that contrary to claims by the State Government, most of the road projects going on in Abia were being sponsored by the Federal Government through the Niger Delta Development Commission ( NDDC).
He also accused the state government of toying with the welfare of workers claiming that while he was Governor workers were not owed unlike now that they complain of backlog of unlaid wages.
Kalu told the gathering to ignore the insinuations in some quarters that APC is an Islamic party, dismissing the speculation as the handiwork of the opposition to demonise and blackmail the party.
”Please ignore the people deceiving you , going to churches and mosques telling them that APC is an Islamic party. It is not true. In 1999 they said PDP was an Hausa/ Fulani party but I said it was not true and you later found out.”
Kalu called for the support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid, saying it will be in the interest of Ndigbo for him to have a second tenure.
”Today I am standing by President Muhammadu Buhari. My choice is to be in APC. Buhari means so well for Ndigbo.
”When Buhari won in 2015 I went to him and told him I am quitting politics. But he told me that I am too young to quit politics. He asked me what I wanted, and I told him that what Ndigbo need is good road and he told me it will be done.
”Today he is building roads in South East including the Enugu Port Harcourt Express way which PDP under Obasanjo and Jonathan could not do. He is also building the second Niger bridge. Our people need that bridge and I am sure he will complete it”.
On the gale of defection that has hit APC , Kalu said those dumping the party had the liberty to make their political choice, bud added quickly that the development would in no way affect the fortunes of the party in 2019.
”Every four years politicians who are not pleased with their party change to another party. I suggest we create a traveling department in every party so that travelers can travel to another party of their choice.”
Kalu further descended on PDP said it had disappointed Nigerians during the 16 years it was in power, adding that he is one of the founding fathers of PDP but had to quit because of impunity and other anomalies.
He boasted that if PDP were to be a business he would have owned 90% equity haven donated the initial N500 million seed money needed to fund the party shortly after its formation.
According to him, the fund was the highest single donation the party received from any individual.
Kalu also said he donated to money in millions to ex President Olusegun Obasanjo when he was to contest for the Presidency under the platform of PDP in 1999.
In his remarks, APC Chairman in the state, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa, urged the party members to work hard and ensure the victory of the party in their various wards.
He expressed confidence that APC would take over the state come 2019.
