President Muhammadu Buhari, has said that Nigerians will no longer tolerate such perversion of justice, as the annulment of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election.
The President stated this on Tuesday, at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, after conferring the posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR, on the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, election, late M.K.O. Abiola.
The President also awarded Abiola’s running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe, and the late Human Rights Lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, with the awards of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, GCON.
Buhari said that the awards ceremony was not intended to open old wounds, but in national interest “to assuage our feelings”.
“Our action is to bury the negative side of June 12. We are celebrating the positive side”, the President said.
He added: ” Such act of injustice will no longer be tolerated again by Nigerians.”
President Buhari speaking further, asked Nigerians to accept the decision to present the awards in good faith.
On behalf of Nigerians, Buhari apologised to Abiola’s family, and the families of all those who died in the struggle for the validation of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election.
